A Week in the Life of the Crossroads Resident
Hello everyone once again!
I am Wes Huntington, the Communications Specialist at Crossroads Campus Ministry, ELCA at Minnesota State University, Mankato for the 2015-16 academic year. I also live here, so I have to maintain the place with Connor to make Crossroads inviting and welcoming for everyone to relax, hang out with one or the both of us, talk to Pastor Tammy, and above all having a place where we can worship God in all of His goodness.
This week, the blog will be about what goes on as the Crossroads Resident. I felt it was necessary to write this one based solely on the fact that may be not a lot of people know what goes on as a Crossroads resident, and while most probably know what goes on, the others probably don't. There may be some things I may leave out, but that is due to confidentiality.
For me, as one of the two Crossroads Residents, we have to maintain the place to have everything not be a pigsty and be a clean and welcoming place for everyone of the campus community and the Mankato community to enjoy. We have a list of chores we have to do, both daily and weekly.
DAILY CHORES
The daily chores for example include opening both entrances (the main entrance and the entrance nearby Pastor Tammy's one of two offices), sweeping the main hallway and unloading the dishwasher in the Residence Kitchen. If it has snowed, we have to shovel a path for the people to get in and out. Hopefully we won't have to do that too often this winter during the emerging El Nino pattern, which usually means less snow and warmer than normal temperatures. I know I'm crossing my fingers!
WEEKLY CHORES
The weekly chores for example can include cleaning all three restrooms (the main one and the two in the basement), sweeping and mopping both the main hallway and the Sanctuary and setting up for Worship on Wednesdays, Lunch for $1 on Tuesdays and the Dinner and Discussion on Sundays.
ADDITIONAL CHORES
There may be additional chores that may be asked of the Resident(s). A few things that I do as the Communications Specialist (which goes hand-in-hand with the chores), is that I update our sandwich board that sits in the main entryway just inside the entrance. I just change a few words on there, but generally you will see "Join us here at (time) for (event goes here)."
I did do elaborate things like:
But mainly I just do the default thing, which I just mentioned. It's a lot easier to manage it, and you don't to have to fuddle through numerous number and letter cards in order to get it done. Plus, fuddling through them takes time, time that can be spent doing something else.
COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST
As the Communications Specialist for Crossroads, I also come up with our weekly e-newsletter, telling people what's on the menu for Lunch for $1, and other things going on, such as ManDate, Worship and Dinner and Discussion, and also come up with the Semester Newsletter (which I will probably get a start on Friday, 10/2!), with articles ranging from Lunch for $1, Worship, Dinner and Discussion and a lot of other things. That will go out in November. There is also a Supporters Newsletter, and that's about numerous happening at Crossroads that most need to know what's going on in the ministry. That's all I can probably say about it.
These are basically the chores that the Residents have to do. This our "rent" for the entire year after paying a deposit at the beginning of the lease. I just wanted to give you a sense of what goes on as the Resident of Crossroads.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, Pastor Tammy, or Connor. You can also find out more about the ministry at the Crossroads website. You can learn more about Connor, myself, and the other student leaders about what they think about Crossroads. You can also find out about Campus Cupboard and other things as well. It's all right there.
Until next week, this is Wes Huntington signing off.
I leave you with this from Psalm 103:3-5 (NIV):

3 who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
5 who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
